December 21st Announcements

Lutheran World Relief Coffee Project -  Mission Project for 2015
Through the LWR Coffee Project, a partnership between Lutheran World Relief and Equal Exchange, Lutherans can enjoy delicious fairly traded products while supporting small-scale farmers across the world. Farmers earn a fair price for their crops, have access to affordable credit and can invest in education, health care and sustainable agriculture, building a better future for their families. In addition, for all fairly traded coffee, tea, cocoa, sugar and snacks purchased through the LWR Coffee Project, Equal Exchange give $0.20 per pound to LWR for projects supporting small-scale coffee farmers. We hope everyone will enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and help support these small farmers.
Jean Wormstadt has different coffees and tea available for purchase. Tea is $4.50 and coffee ranges from $10-$11.

WELCA will have a meeting following the December 28th service to elect officers.

Kids had their dress rehearsal this morning and are ready to perform for you on Wednesday evening. Be ready to join them in song!

Angel Tree Gifts & Announcements

On Friday, Sunday School children and their parents from Immanuel Lutheran, rural Iroquois, purchased items for kids on the Salvation Army Angel Tree. The Sunday School children asked the congregation for donations and since they were so generous, they were each able to adopt an angel that was their age and purchase a gift for them. The kids had so much fun picking out presents and learned how important giving to others was! After shopping, they enjoyed supper together and then went caroling at StoneyBrook Suites Assisted Living and to a couple of our elderly church members’ houses. This morning, they got to show & tell the congregation what they purchased for their angel before delivering the presents. They cannot wait until next year to do it again. THANK YOU FOR DONATING!!!!

Thank You for Donating to Food Drive

Reminder: Sunday School is at 5:00 and Church is at 6:00 tonight!!

THANK YOU FOR DONATING!

What an amazing night...so many generous friends! We started around 4:30 east of the church and 80+ miles later we finished in Huron around 7:00. We received donations from over 30 families and everyone was so generous! The food pantry was very excited to receive all of our donations. After we unloaded all the food they showed us where all the food is stored and what goes into each basket that is given to the families. Each basket is supposed to last them two months. They also told us that after Christmas the donations will slow down and they will need a lot of donations in June and July because their supply will be very low!

They were as follows: 11 soups, 12 cans of fruit, 78 vegetables, 5 canned meat, 4 tuna/herring, 6 bottles of honey, 1 peanut butter, 3 oatmeals, 4 cereals, 22 rice & pastas, 1 instant potato, 6 rice-a-roni, 4 macaroni & cheese, 1 hamburger helper, 6 stuffing mixes, 1 box of broth, 1 spaghetti sauce, 1 ramen noodle, 1 hot cocoa, 1 package of coffee filters, 2 turkeys, 1 gravy, 2 cornbread mixes, 4 cake mixes, 2 pizza crust mixes, 1 package toilet paper, 1 package paper towels, 1 package of sliced meat, 1 jar of minced meat, 3 zebra cakes, 1 jar jalapeno peppers, 4 bags of candy, 1 marshmallow, 1 package cookies, 1 pudding, 1 popcorn, 1 apple pie kit and 3 boxes of granola bars. They collected 198 items to earn a total of 10,675 scavenger hunt points (a little less than last year) but are challenging themselves to beat it next year & to collect food this summer for the food pantry!

Thank you,
Lauren, Tessah, Katie, Lexi, Kelby, Jodi & Stephanie

Pictures from VBS last week

If you were not able to join us for our Vacation Bible School program on Friday night, you missed out on a very fun program! The kids did a great job with their parts, songs and actions! We would also like to thank everyone that was able to volunteer whether donating time, supplies or money...it would not be a success without all of your generosity! THANK YOU!!

Weird animals was the name of our bible school program this year. We had lots of fun each day talking about how God not only made beautiful animals but also how God made each one of us special and beautiful too!

The offering collected during bible school and at the program is being donated to Lisa Johnson, Lori Peskey's aunt.  Lisa had been having some health problems beginning in April. What doctors initially thought was a double ear and sinus infection has actually turned out to be Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. CJD is a very rare and fatal brain disorder. A hospital stay in Sioux Falls led to a trip to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN for a full diagnosis. There is no cure or treatment for CJD, so the days ahead will be spent making sure she’s as comfortable as possible as the disease runs its course. Lisa is currently at home outside of Huron in Hospice care. If you were not at the program, but would still like to make a donation you can do so online at http://www.gofundme.com/love4lisa

Power of Prayer

Words cannot express how thankful I am for all of the thoughts and prayers you sent for my family. A week ago yesterday, I received the phone call that you pray you never receive, my dad’s heart had stopped and he was on life support in Aberdeen. After a fast trip to Aberdeen to meet my family we were informed that he had fallen outside of the Federal building in Aberdeen and by the grace of God he had placed people in his path to help him. A lady and her husband were driving by and saw my dad fall so they jumped out and ran to help him. He was conscious when they got to him, but then a few minutes later he was not so another man came out of the building and started CPR. As a group was gathering around him a pastor came along and started a prayer chain around my dad. Soon after, the ambulance arrived and got my dad’s heart back into rhythm, but he was still not breathing on his own. We were being faced with the question of what he would want us to do…keep him on life support or not. That was not a question we were ready to answer so we prayed. A few moments later his doctor came out and said that he wanted permission to try one more thing and we of course said do whatever you can. They decided to fly him to Sioux Falls to start him on a cooling process. They would make his body temperature lower so that hopefully his brain would rest and reset his body. After we arrived in Sioux Falls they started that process and they told us it would be 3-5 days before we would know whether he would come out of it. Well, thanks to all of the prayers God sent us a miracle. He was supposed to be in the cooling process for 24 hours and half way through that he woke up. He squeezed our hands, wiggled his toes and blinked his eyes…was such an amazing sight to see! No words can express the emotion we felt at that time. That evening they started warming him up again and by Saturday morning he was warmed back up to his normal temperature. By noon or so he was breathing on his own and he was taken off of the ventilator. WOW!!! He instantly started talking to us, but had no recollection of what happened & no short term memory. If you have ever seen the movie “50 First Dates,” that is exactly what was happening. We could tell him something and a few seconds later he would forget and ask the same question again, but we didn’t care. We would answer the same question over and over as long as we had our dad. My mom said she wanted a phone number to call someone and he rattled it right off and knew who we all were so that is all we cared about. We have a rather large family so there was always one or two people with him at all times and our “family room - waiting room” was full! By that night they wanted to move him out of the ICU, but the hospital was full so there were no rooms available for him so he stayed in ICU until he was moved to the heart hospital on Monday afternoon to put his defibrillator/pacemaker in and on Tuesday afternoon he returned home. Therefore, in the time that it was supposed to take us to know whether he would wake up or not he was already back home. If that doesn’t scream an Easter miracle, I don’t know what does. The power of prayer is such an amazing thing!! My sister has been in contact with the lady that saw him fall so that is the only reason we know what really happened that morning since none of us were with him. So we are so grateful to her, the man who performed CPR (which we are still trying to find him so we can THANK him), the pastor that started the prayer chain around him and all of our family, friends & church families for praying for him and our family.  The pastor in Aberdeen started his prayer chain at his church, the lady that found him started her prayer chain in Conde, my aunts & cousins started prayer chains at all of their churches, my sisters & I all asked to have our prayer chains started at our churches as well. Thanks to all of them God answered our prayers and my dad is home recovering. Thankfully, he did not have an actual heart attack either. He has had an irregular heartbeat and for some reason his heart got out of rhythm that morning which caused him to pass out and the hard fall made his heart stop which is why they implanted the defibrillator.
My family has always had a strong faith, but after this it is even stronger and now even more than ever we believe in miracles. We've seen one happen right before our eyes.
Thank you!! ~ Jodi Burma
