October Parish Newsletter & Scavenger Hunt Food Drive
Click here to view the October 2017 Parish newsletter.
The 5th-8th grade Sunday School students will be doing a scavenger hunt food drive again on Friday, October 13th. We will start by the church around 4:30 pm and will work our way south around the country and end up in Huron by 7:00 pm. The collected items will be donated to the Salvation Army Food Pantry. The youth will have a list of items to earn them scavenger hunt points, but any non-perishable items (please nothing that needs to remain cold...some items are in our vehicle for 3.5 hours) that you donate will be more than appreciated. Last year, they collected 12,975 scavenger hunt points so they hope to get even more this year. If you will not be home, but would like to donate you may leave items at the church or talk to Jodi to make other arrangements. Also, if you know you will not be home please let Jodi know so we do not stop at your house.
Thank you in advance for helping us "Can Hunger!"
Note from Pastor Josh:
The shooting in Las Vegas has left me feeling confused, in shock, angry, and heartbroken. I have, several times, turned to God in prayer but had difficulty finding words. If you feel this way now, or for times when you may, I have a couple suggestions. Take them or leave them, but here they are.
1) Read the Psalms. Open to the psalms and read until you find a verse that speaks the words you cannot muster.
Psalm 39:12 is where I landed tonight.
Hear my prayer, O Lord,
and listen to my cry;
do not shut your ears to my weeping.
For I am but a sojourner with you,
a passing guest,
as all my forebearers were.
2) Read prayers written by others. Our hymnal has a treasury of prayers written for various circumstances on pgs. 72-87. Here are a few prayers for healing.
Healing for those in affliction
Lord Christ, you came into the world as one of us, and suffered as we do. As we go through the trials of life, help us to realize that you are with us at all times and in all things; that we have no secrets from you; and that your loving grace enfolds us for eternity. In the security of your embrace we pray.
Amen.
For emergency workers
God of earth and air, water and fire, height and depth, we pray for those who work in danger, who rush in to bring hope and help and comfort when others flee to safety, whose mission is to seek and save, serve and protect, and whose presence embodies the protection of the Good Shepherd. Give them caution and concern for one another, so that in safety they may do what must be done, under your watchful eye. Support them in their courage and dedication that they may continue to save lives, ease pain, and mend the torn fabric of lives and social order; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
For Protection through life
O God, full of compassion, we commit and commend ourselves to you, in whom we live and move and have our being. Be the goal of our pilgrimage, and our rest by the way. Give us refuge from the turmoil of worldly distractions beneath the shadow of your wings. Let our hearts, so often a sea of restless waves, find peace in you, O God; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
And I am praying for all of you this night, my dear friends.
Dear Jesus, as a hen covers her chicks with her wings to keep them safe, protect us this night under your golden wings; for your mercy's sake.
Amen.

Prayer for Rain....
God of life, all good gifts come from you: the breath of life that creates us, the fellow creatures that accompany us, the saving waters that renew and refresh us.
We look to you in our time of need. Give to the earth the water of life, water to bring forth food for your creatures. Send us rain to heal the earth and to cleanse its face, water to quench your thirsty land. Let faith be born from our doubts, hope from our despair, compassion from our troubles. Let the rains come, so we may know once more your care for creatures. Then we will bless your great name and declare your faithful love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Six confirmation students from our Parish spent last Sunday-Friday at NeSoDak for Confirmation camp. Katie, Kelby & Lexi went from Immanuel. They all had a blast and would like to THANK Pastor Josh for taking them on this fun adventure and for their church family keeping them in your prayers!
The theme for the week was In God's Love is FOR YOU based on 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28. People of all ages were reminded of the powerful love shown in Christ Jesus, and that it comes to each and every one of us.

Update on Lane Rigge from Caring Bridge site on
Our little Lane has been making great progress, steadily
gaining weight an ounce or so at a time. As of Last night he weighted in
at 6 lbs. He is on number 9 of his 10 epo shots. Hopefully they
worked and getting his body to create more red blood cells. Fingers
crossed we don't have to do another round of those. Both Lane and Mom
hate them... he continues to wear the small cannula at 1/2 L. He just
hasn't grown strong enough to keep his breathing and heart rate steady
and out of the alarm range on his monitor. Wednesday afternoon he tried
using a bottle for the 1st time and did well. His bottle is tiny amd
measures in CC instead of ounces like those pirchased in the store, it
was made for babies just his size. He is able to drink 9 to 22 cc on
his own before tiring out, the rest is then given through his gavagu.
He has graduated to 54cc every 3 hours with trying to bottle at every
other feeding. We will continue to keep everyone posted on his progress, it may be a
few days between posts since he is doing so well. Thank you all for your
continued prayers, cards, gifts, texts, and phone calls it means a lot
to us to have so much love and support from our family and friends.

Immanuel VBS will be held Thursday, June 8th & Friday, June 9th from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm with the program being held Friday night. More details will follow but be sure to mark your calendars!!! If you kids/grandkids/friends are able to join us let Jodi Burma know by Sunday, May 28th, but the sooner the better so we can make plans for a couple of fun filled days at Immanuel!
Today the Sunday School youth made their annual Resurrection Rolls during Sunday School (marshmallow-Jesus, melted butter-oils, cinnamon & sugar-spices, crescent rolls-white cloth and the oven-tomb....when we opened the tomb after they were baked the marshmallow was gone-Jesus had risen). They also did a lesson using the resurrection eggs. Each egg has a symbol from the Easter story and a little reading to go along with each one.

Designate Your Thrivent Choice Dollars
If you have not already directed your Thrivent Choice Dollars to
Immanuel, please do so by March 31st, so we do not miss out on
those dollars! Even if you chose in the past to have your dollars
automatically directed to Immanuel you will need to either go online or
call Thrivent to have them directed to our congregation. Thrivent's
phone number is 800-847-4836 and mention "Thrivent Choice Dollars." If
you would rather direct them online it is easy!! Just go to
www.thrivent.com and click on "My Thrivent" in the top right corner. After you are
logged in it will show you the amount of Thrivent
Choice Dollars that you can direct. Click on that and then it will open
up a new page to search for our congregation. Under organization type
Immanuel and Carthage, SD for the city and then click search. It will
then bring up our congregation and click "Direct Choice Dollars Now!"
